Ashes of Ariandel, the first of two planned DLC’s for Dark Souls III, will be out on October 25th, but before we play any of it we get to see it in Bandai Namco’s “Divert thine eyes” gameplay trailer.
The trailer has a plate-clad knight facing off some fire-breathing torch-blowers, a lumbering Viking, the creepy fly-creatures from the trailer, and, of course, Dark Souls style bosses. No new weapons or armor sets yet, but the trailer did show off new ideas to DS3 like snow falling underneath you when you stand on it and a two-enemy boss fight where one is a humanoid while the other is a giant wolf, or as I like to call him, Sif 2.0.
Bloodborne Spoiler ahead! The other boss fights are a woman with a scythe who has all the looks of a Dark Souls boss with the moveset somewhere between Bloodborne’s Gherman and Lady Maria, and a hulking beast that’s been tied to a chair with what appears to be the Lord Vessel filled with lava or fire in his hands. While the scythe-wielding woman uses skill and ice, the beast uses sheer strength and fire. Both of these bosses as well as the Viking and bugs mentioned earlier appeared in the original announcement trailer as well.
Bandai Namco and Miyazaki have both referred to Dark Souls III as the “Final installment” in the Dark Souls series, but at least we’ll have Ashes of Ariandel and the next DLC to help wipe away our tears afterwards. Will we finally find closure in a Souls game? Probably not, but we’ll find lots and lots of death for sure.
The Ashes of Ariandel DLC will release on October 25th. There’s still no release date on the second DLC.
