Big big news on the publisher front here, as the title says, THQ Nordic have acquired Koch Media for $149 million. If you’ve never heard of the latter then perhaps referring to them as Deep Silver. That’s right, growing industry giant THQ Nordic continues to grow and assimilate all in its path like some kind of game publishing version of The Blob.
The acquisition puts several studios and big properties under the THQ Nordic label including; Dambuster Studios, developers of Homefront: The Revolution; Fishlabs, best known for their excellent Galaxy On Fire series; and Volition, who have a few small games you may be familiar with such as the Red Faction series, the Saint’s Row series, FreeSpace 2, and the recent Agents Of Mayhem. Never heard of them? Me either.
Other games/series published by Deep Silver in the last decade include Dead Island, Metro, Shin Megami Tensei, Shenmue 3, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Killer Is Dead, and a couple of hilarious stinkers like Mighty No 9 and Ride To Hell: Retribution. Hey, nobody’s perfect and we hope THQ Nordic got a discount for that last two being on the resume.
On the business side of things – Koch Media will continue to operate separately from THQ Nordic and no restructuring or cost saving measures are expected or planned so it’s likely that there won’t be any layoffs which is always a good sign after a merger of this magnitude. In a released statement their CEOs had this to say:
“Koch Media has a long history of profitability despite losses incurred from some less successful game releases. THQ Nordic is convinced that the development studios of Deep Silver as part of THQ Nordic will successfully deliver at least four ongoing AAA game projects including Metro Exodus as well as the next Volition Studio AAA release and the next Dambuster Studio AAA release, together with a number of other game development and publishing titles.”, says Lars Wingefors, CEO THQ Nordic
“I strongly believe that THQ Nordic is a great strategic fit with Koch Media. In addition to having long experience within games development and publishing, THQ Nordic has the skills, willingness and capital to deliver growth in the future.”, says Dr. Klemens Kundratitz, CEO Koch Media
