Sadly not called “Red Dead Retribution,” nonetheless, the third installment in Rockstar Games’ open-world Western game, Red Dead Redemption 2 is aiming for a Fall 2017 release. If you missed a chance to play through the tale of John Marston as he adventures across the decaying American West, you are depriving yourself of one of the best open-world games of the previous generation. Sure, Red Dead Redemption may have only appeared on PS3 and Xbox 360, but it attests a lot to the quality of the game if it was one of the most played games of the systems. Also, the PlayStation family has the Metal Gear Solid games. Check it out.
Anyway, what we’re treated to in this initial trailer is a series of lush, outdoor scenes of the plains, buffalo and coal-fired trains included. Seeming to be set before the events of the original RDR, Red Dead Redemption 2 this time also looks to be offering up seven protagonists, if the initial promotional artwork and closing shots from the trailer are any indication. Might we see a return of both first and third-person gameplay from GTA V? Hard to tell right now.
What we do know is that Red Dead Redemption 2 is currently only announced for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and that it will “also provide the foundation for a brand new online multiplayer experience,” per the official website. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing is your own opinion, but I was a fan of the metagame and various open-world activities to partake in with the original’s multiplayer. Of greater note is the fact that it will not be coming to PC, at least initially. Various community theories as to why this might be range from “Rockstar still doesn’t feel comfortable porting their games to PC,” to “Rockstar is aiming to sell RDR2 twice, for greater profit.” You’re free to formulate your own opinion on the matter, but it’s still disappointing nonetheless.
Various rumors swirled for a long time about the nature and possible existence of a Red Dead Redemption 2, many of which predicted that it would be set before the events of the previous installment, and that it would take place to the east of the original territories. Regardless of where or how it takes place on the American Frontier, look forward to the release next Fall 2017 or keep your fingers crossed for a PC announcement a year later.
