Metro Exodus Now Timed Exclusive on Epic Games Store

Posted on 29 Jan 2019

Yet another game has jumped ship from Steam and ended up an exclusive on the Epic Games Store, Metro Exodus. Fret not, Steam pre-orderers – your pre-order will be honoured according to the publisher and you’ll still receive your game on the regular release date with pre-order bonuses intact. New customers can no longer purchase the game on Steam though.

Competition for Valve and Steam is important, other store fronts just don’t seem to be providing the impetus for change despite their success, and you don’t need a degree in economics to know that monopolies are bad. However, exclusives aren’t competing and aren’t good for the end user either.

Metro Exodus is only a timed exclusive on the Epic Games Store until 14 February 2020 – that’s a whole year from its release date. We’re going to borrow a quote from the official Steam store page notification here:

We think the decision to remove the game is unfair to Steam customers, especially after a long pre-sale period. We apologize to Steam customers that were expecting it to be available for sale through the February 15th release date, but we were only recently informed of the decision and given limited time to let everyone know.”

You can find more information in the press release below, and on a very brief FAQ posted to the Steam discussion board for Metro Exodus.

We also highly recommend checking out John Walker’s excellent post that goes into greater depth on the subject here because frankly, we’d be repeating exactly the same things he says over there. Let us know what you think in the comments below.
