Total War: Warhammer – Chaos Pack Propaganda

The Creative Assembly and SEGA have announced that their controversial pre-order ‘reward’ Chaos Warrior pack will now also apply to those that buy the games within the first week of release. On the surface, this is a pretty neat step for those that do not pre-order out of principle, effectively they can still receive the pack for free post launch. Albeit only for a week.

But then again, while obviously nice on some level, the business perspective must be taken into consideration. Games need to sell and Total War: Warhammer has to be a smasher in terms of profits for SEGA and CA alike. So while the good press might help alleviate the initial burn when the pre-order pack was announced, let’s look at reality.

Even though completely flawed in many regards, the last Total War games received positive reviews all round from games media. Even we gave Rome II a high score. Better said: I did and I honestly regretted it after my nostalgia fuelled enthusiasm wore off. Day 1 reviews have a high impact on sales figures and the most sales for this title will be in that very first week. We will have a community struggling between a (very likely) overly positive games media, potential peer pressure and the desire for a free pack, and their (rational) patience in waiting for the initial hype to wear off for more rational accounts to surface.

So yes, while this is all nice and dandy, don’t forget business.

Official Press Release

Chaos Warriors DLC for Total War: WARHAMMER, Now Free Week One.

Creative Assembly today announced that the Chaos Warriors Race Pack will now also be offered free to players who purchase Total War: WARHAMMER in the first week of sale.

“The Chaos Warriors have proven to be hugely popular” said Creative Director, Mike Simpson “and, by extending the deadline for getting them for free by a week, we can ensure loyal fans who don’t feel like pre-ordering  don’t miss out, while still rewarding early adopters whose support is really valuable to us.”

“We’re really confident in the game and with the community backing us so strongly this should be the biggest launch for Total War ever.”

Retailers who are currently supporting the pre-order will continue offering the DLC for free into the first week, with the free period coming to an end at 18:00 BST on the 31st May.

Catch the Chaos Warriors in action in this new Let’s Play video, featuring the titanic Kholek Suneater. Swathed in lightning and wielding a hammer the size of a building, Suneater is the most ancient of the Dragon Ogres and one of the Legendary Lords available to play as in the Chaos Warriors Race Pack.

Total War: WARHAMMER is out on the 24th May.

Looks as if they're taking a hint from Battlefleet Gothic. The difference, other than BFG's early adopter program lasting 2 months, is that the DLC you get for free with BFG doesn't exist yet. Chaos exists in the game now; they've been showing it off in their own promo videos.
