Silver Shines Again on Steam

Silver, one of the most interesting RPGs to grace the 90s, was released on Steam today (with 20% off discount until June 9th). Spruced up to run on modern gaming hardware and support “today’s standard rendering resolutions”. Not entirely sure what that means, but it should mean you can run it at 1920 x 1080 at least.

I actually played through Silver, way back in the year 2000, when it was ported to the SEGA Dreamcast, and it truly, as THQ Nordic claim, is one of the most unique RPGs ever made. Doing away with the typical leveling system based on killing X many enemies or Y quests. Characters level up at set points in the story, which allowed the game to be far better balanced than many titles. As much fun as it is to power level (not that I do that of course) being hit with a properly scaled challenge can be far more rewarding.

Fun fact, in the UK, Silver was best known for including the voice of one of the Gladiators. There were big, cardboard cut-outs of her in stores hoping to draw in the punters. Seemed to work too, though I’m pretty sure being a damn fine game was more of a draw. Either that or the real life alien, Tom Baker, best known as the fourth Doctor Who, provided the games narration.

I mean, come on! The only way this could be any more awesome is if it starred Brian Blessed booming voice. For those, like myself, who remember this fondly, there’s no better time to get back into it. For everyone else. Dude! What are you waiting for?!

Guess who’s back: Classic RPG Silver now on Steam

THQ Nordic brings 1999’s legendary game to the leading digital platform

Vienna, Austria, June 2nd 2017: Silver shines again and for the first time on Steam – what else you need to know? Now ready to run on current operating systems and supporting today’s standard rendering resolutions.

About Silver

Silver, a corrupt and sinister sorcerer, rules the land of Jarrah with an iron fist. He and his henchmen have abducted the village women as part of a pact with the almighty god, Apocalypse. Now, only one man can put a stop to Silver and his minions. That man is you, David, a promising young knight whose wife is among the captured. In order to succeed, you’ll need to recruit allies, master your swordplay, learn the art of magic, and venture through hostile worlds teeming with Silver’s corrupt followers to find 8 lost artifacts. Begin your quest, and become a hero!

Back in 1999, Silver was the European answer to JRPGs. With eye-candy in the form of pre-rendered 2D backgrounds, manga-inspired character design, and console-style gameplay, it introduced PC gamers to a new genre.

  • Gripping story and polished gameplay combine to make a “simple” RPG that’s still a lot of fun.
  • Form your party from a cast of interesting and diverse characters, each with their own unique traits. Sekune is a master of archery, Cagen is a skilled martial artist, Jug’s strength makes him a force to be reckoned with, and many more…
  • The unique combat system with real-time, fast-paced action–you assume direct control over one of the characters, and the rest of your team fights on their own.
  • Intuitive Swordplay, Silver’s unique control method allows quick and intuitive handling of action, which is especially helpful in the heat of battle. Ultimately, the mouse becomes the player’s “sword arm”. Sweep the mouse to your left and your hero will slash to the left, sweep the mouse forward and your hero will lunge. Magical effects, throwing knives, arrow, and even catapults are also controlled through the mouse system.

As soon as I read "Brian Blessed" I read everything else with his voice.

Sounds like a great game.

It is really interesting. Sort of flew under the radar a bit at the time, despite the marketing. But it certainly found its audience along the way all the same

It defiantly flew under the radar, it was one of the few actual Dreamcast games I purchased back in the day, I never did finish it though, it was hard as balls if I remember correctly. I'm semi-excited to try it on Steam... but... man, those visuals, doesn't seem like they did much to port it over besides slapping a shitty filter on it.
