Today sparks the return of the old “creating your own theme park” style of tycoon game, and Planet Coaster has really taken the lead.
Made by a large section of the staff that was involved with the original Roller Coaster Tycoon series, and maintaining the same sense of humour as the original games. Planet Coaster is being developed by Frontier Development, the same guys that brought us the popular Elite: Dangerous game. Taking the mantel of the original RCT and taking it further with windy paths and much more freedom, Planet Coaster will let your imagination run wild as you build the theme park of your dreams, right down to the individual colours of paving stones (okay, maybe not that much detail, but close enough.)
One interesting aspect is the modified terrain system, allowing for better waterways and caverns, even the possibility of building islands in the sky, and that’s before you even start with your first kid’s ride, or near-death coaster ride from hell. Also for those who want a bit more than just building a park, Planet Coaster has also a very good simulation system, taking inspiration from the original and adding in more advanced features, you can manage and control almost anything. Tie all this into a better simulation system for each guest, and with more behaviors and backgrounds than the old RCT series, you can easily get the best of any world.
Now best of all, is that Planet Coaster has a way of sharing your parks and creations with the world using Steam Workshop, even full parks can be shared with people round the world, heck you can even go riding in first person on someone else’s ride if you wish. ‘Planet Coaster is the coaster park simulation we’ve wanted to make for over a decade,’ says Frontier’s Chief Creative Officer, Jonny Watts. ‘We wanted to give players the best creation tools, the most sophisticated management simulation, incredibly realistic park guests and the best ways to share the community’s creativity. To us, these things make Planet Coaster the future of simulation games.’
So, to build a serious theme park, or to do the old silliness of watching carts crash and burn like in previous RCT games, decisions, decisions.
