Ubisoft announced from their Montreal studio that they have released on Steam’s Early Access the new Might & Magic: Showdown tabletop like game. Following with the setting of the new Ubisoft’s lore for Might & Magic, which doesn’t tie completely into the original series, but a new take on computer tabletop gaming with Showdown.

Might & Magic Showdown is inspired by our childhood memories of playing with figurines,” said Philippe Ducharme, producer. “The rich lore of Might & Magic was the perfect starting point to bring our innovative gameplay to life.”

Playing a team of 4 characters, you start off with what are plastic miniatures and can paint and rename them to your hearts content, even with the free Paint Tool on Steam that you can practice on. Showdown gives you 60 single player battles to sharpen your tactics before you head onto the PvP games against your friends, currently there are 20 figures, 7 of them Hero Characters, the paint version only gives you 5 random to play with though.

There is currently a contest being held where you go to the free painter and paint up a model and submit it to the official forum threadthe winners of each of the 5 characters painted will be added in as well. I am looking at all of this and my first thought is that Ubisoft is trying to beat Games Workshop to a full blown electronic tabletop game, as of the high detail of the work, though I am aware Dawn of War had an “Army Painter” but it wasn’t anywhere near as close as in depth as this one is.

So head on over to Steam and get painting, or play the current Early Access that’s available, also check out this interesting 30 minute look into Might & Magic: Showdown on Twitch.
