Imperium Galactica I & II Remastered

It’s been a mere eighteen years since Imperium Galactica 2 was released, but in the current resurgence for all things 4X, it was only a matter of time before someone revisited these classics. THQ Nordic acquired the rights to IG I & II last year, and they deserve a resounding thanks for breathing new life into this old master.

Most people refer to the 1996 game Master of Orion II when talking about the grand masters of 4X space strategy. However, IG I released in 1997, was a solid and well loved addition to the genre too, and it’s 1999 sequel Imperium Galactica II: Alliances was frankly, brilliant, ahead of its time, and even now there isn’t really another game that can be called its equal.

IG II sports real times ship battles, that required a good deal of forethought and strategic depth. It also encompassed all the other usual mechanics like exploration, colony management, diplomacy, spying, ship design, and research, and it pulled them all off (particularly espionage!) with style.

However, IG II’s trump card has to be its ground combat. Planetary invasions take place on an RTS maps, which consist of cities you built (if you’re being invaded) with units that you designed. Compared to other RTS games, the ground combat is nothing to write home about, but the level of immersion it adds cannot be measured.

IG I has been repackaged to run with Dosbox, but IG II has been remastered to run directly on modern systems. Along with support for modern resolutions, remastered graphics, lighting, redone interfaces, redone ground maps, and much more. Imperium Galactica II is still, one of the best space 4X games ever made, and with a modern remastered version now available, I’ll be snapping this one up once again.

Remastered Imperium Galactica I & II are available on GOG and Steam for £10.28 (or your regional equivalent) including a discount of 20%. THQ Nordic have not released a remastered trailer, so be aware that the video above is very dated.
