The latest offering about Watch Dogs 2 presents some of the signature characters, and further presents them as heroes. Fighting the noble fight, bringing dark things to light. The so called Hacktivist archetype. Perhaps best known in the real world due to the group Anonymous, who released some information about major political figures with Ku Klux Klan ties, for example. Ubisoft want to assure us that their intention is to present such people as accurately as possible and, supposedly, have had feedback from members of the hacker community.
To be honest however, what I’d be more interested in seeing is the flip side of the coin. A story is always more compelling when it’s a tragedy. People with noble goals and ideals falling victim to, and becoming, the very thing they set out to oppose. Which we’re unlikely to see in Watch Dogs 2. But we’re also assured that, whilst Ubi are taking their subject seriously, they are not taking themselves too seriously. So there’s still going to be that sense of balls to the wall, batshit stupidity when you steal a truck and run over fifteen people with a UAV taping it to show to your friends.
