Game Developers Conference 2020 Postponed

Over the past couple of weeks many publishers and technology providers have dropped out of this year’s Game Developers Conference (GDC) pre-emptively over fears about the spread of novel coronavirus, COVID-19, and the impact it has had on travel worldwide. Of the major sponsors only Google, Intel, and Nvidia had not withdrawn from the event.

Last night GDC released a statement on their website stating that the March 2020 event will be postponed until later in the year. That’s not to say the entire event is cancelled however; many speakers and their presentations will still take place albeit in video form and will be made available for free online via the GDC YouTube channel and free section of the GDC Vault. Additionally, the Independent Games Festival and Game Developers Choice Awards will be streamed online via Twitch during the period between 16-20 March, when the event would have taken place.

GDC are also handling refunds for attendees and those affected will not have to pay cancellation fees related to hotel rooms booked through the GDC hotel website and room blocks.

The official statement released last night can be found in the press release section below as well as here. The GDC FAQ website also has several questions answered here and the official GDC Twitter account will likely play host to further announcements regarding the event in the coming days and weeks.

Official Press Release

After close consultation with our partners in the game development industry and community around the world, we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone the Game Developers Conference this March.

Having spent the past year preparing for the show with our advisory boards, speakers, exhibitors, and event partners, we’re genuinely upset and disappointed not to be able to host you at this time .

We want to thank all our customers and partners for their support, open discussions and encouragement. As everyone has been reminding us, great things happen when the community comes together and connects at GDC. For this reason, we fully intend to host a GDC event later in the summer. We will be working with our partners to finalize the details and will share more information about our plans in the coming weeks.
