As of the 9th of January, 2017, Savage Resurrection became free to play. This remake of the classic 2003 game Savage progressed to release state in August last year. However, dissatisfaction by the core fans with some design decisions and a lack of feedback from the developers, led to a rapid decline in its player base.
On new year’s eve the developers finally broke their silence and announced that Savage Resurrection will become a Free to Play game, and on Monday, that became the new reality, and has already seen an upsurge in players, even filling entire servers for the first time in months.
I’ve said enough farewells to some great games because FTP alone is not enough to keep a game afloat. The devs over at S2 Games still need to address concerns from their core fans as well as release more frequent updates, and better tutorial/tips to keep the new players engaged. Of course, some sort of new business model or some other way to pay for those servers must be implicated.
Savage Resurrected has had some troubled times, and they’re not out of the woods just yet, however, it’s a crying shame that so few games fill this niche of asymmetric, hybrid FPS (merging of RTS and FPS mechanics), so I hope that S2 Games stick with the new game plan, there is a reason why the fans have been looking forward to this sequel for over a decade.
