Fox and Ubisoft Massive Open Pandora’s Box With a New Avatar Game

That’s right, in a curious partnership, Fox Interactive are teaming up with Ubisoft Massive and Lightstorm Entertainment (Jim Cameron’s company) to bring Avatar to life as some kind of open world, sandbox type…thing.

Details are actually really sketchy at the moment, in favour of metric shittons of PR speak. All about attention to detail, everyone will experience Pandora differently, my Mum left the iron on. Your guess is as good as mine what that actually means, ’cause the above video is nothing more than some talking heads, interspersed with shots from the film, and maybe about six seconds of what could be “in game” assets.

Now, this is Ubisoft Massive, and they really did do a fantastic job on The Division…eventually. So it might at least be a fun game when it, uhm, actually becomes a game. But there’s really absolutely nothing for us to go on right now, and it’s still just bleedin’ Pocahontas in space!

London, UK— February 28th, 2017 — Today, Ubisoft® announced a partnership with Lightstorm Entertainment and Fox Interactive to create a cutting-edge new game for consoles and PC set on Pandora, the beautiful and dangerous moon from James Cameron’s Avatar film franchise. Massive Entertainment, a Ubisoft studio, is leading the game’s development.

Massive is behind the creation of Tom Clancy’s The Division™, which last spring broke multiple records in the games industry, including the record for the industry’s best-selling new game franchise in an opening week. They are now working on a new AAA-project based on Avatar, the highest-grossing film of all time. Four sequels to Avatar are currently in development, and Lightstorm, Fox Interactive and Massive are working together to create a game that, along with the films, will continue to expand and deepen in the Avatar universe in exciting and innovative ways.

Cameron and Lightstorm entered this partnership after viewing an early game prototype that the team at Massive created using its proprietary Snowdrop engine. Snowdrop is a tailor-made, custom game engine that enables the creation of ultra-realistic game universes, enhanced by dynamic global illumination, stunning real-time destruction and an incredible amount of detail and visual effects. Along with being the engine behind the development of The Division, the Snowdrop engine is also the lead engine on a number of other unannounced Ubisoft projects.
