Bugbyte, the indie developer with a talent for addictive strategy, have announced a surprise return to their favourite series, with Battlevoid: Sector Siege. They have been keeping news of Sector Siege quiet until now because they “weren’t sure we could pull this off”.
Like the previous iterations in the series, Sector Seige will be released for mobile and for PC. “Mobile port” is a derogatory term used by many PC gamers, including me, but Bugbytes previous conversion of Battlevoid: Harbinger is an exception to the rule. It’s a game that was almost too good to be mobile port, so they converted it for PC use, and it didn’t need much to turn it into a great PC game, some improved graphics and a new UI and Harbinger was making a name for itself all over again.
Sector Siege takes many of the series most popular mechanics, and repackages them with a whole new engine, new campaign and some new elements too (RPG crew statistics, boarding and capture mechanics, and reverse engineering alien tech). A full description of the game isn’t possible yet, but having played the previous titles makes me very enthusiastic for whatever Bugbyte do next.
If you haven’t played Battlevoid: Harbinger, but you have a passing like for RTS games, and space exploration (you don’t need to be an expert at either, these are very easy to pick up) then I highly recommend giving Harbinger a spin, and if you’re willing to slum it with the mobile crowd, then Battlevoid: First Contact is an excellent and challenging tower defense game as well.
Bugbyte have more than one bun in the oven right now, I’m looking forward to another game their developing called Space Haven, but I’ll save news on that until it’s more thoroughly cooked. Right now, Sector Siege looks closest to ready, so stay tuned with Pixel Judge, we’ll let you know release dates and other news from Bugbyte as soon as we hear it.
