Apocalypse Now: The Game Kickstarter Campaign

In probably the weirdest game adaptation of a movie I will write about, the classic film Apocalypse Now is being made into a game.

One of the few films that delves into how “War is War and Hell is Hell, and of the two, War is worse”, Apocalypse Now is more remembered for scenes such as the Ride of the Valkyries or the bit after it “Charlie don’t Surf” which makes this game adaptation even stranger.

While the Kickstarter has some details, and being that there isn’t a working prototype yet, we do have a lot of names with some backing behind them, including the director behind the 1979 film himself, Francis Ford Coppola, and Josh Sawyer of Obsidian is acting in a consulting role.

As with any Kickstarter there are “if we go over the initial goal” levels, and with the $3,000,000 USD being a VR version, and including one for getting better voice talent, which is ambiguous enough to possibly mean getting as many of the originals in as possible, it feels just like any other fully fledged Kickstarter.

But that’s where it also falls apart in the opinion of myself and a few friends, this is an adaption of a movie that came out years ago which adaptations don’t go so well, also that it’s more of a cult classic than anything, so it may not get the draw that Erebus LLC wants, even the initial funding level is only $1,100,000 USD, which seems very low.

Time will tell if it gets off the ground, but if it succeeds, it will be interesting to see what happens, and how they will handle Lt. Colonel Kilgore taking the Mekong Delta beach so he and his boys can get in some surfing time.

This will be either epic or a complete disaster. What makes me very weary though is that they claim to have a prototype yet do not show any footage at all except some pre-rendered CGI.

I caught that too, so far, not a lick of evidence to show what to except, very well could be a disaster or a great opportunity, time will tell.
