According to inXile, Colorado is a frozen tundra of opportunity and territory, waiting to be released from the iron grip of cannibals and raiders. While I haven’t been to the Centennial State in quite some time, I do know that Wasteland 3 plops us directly into the Rocky Mountain barrens, setting us loose amongst the peaks. Fresh off of the success of Wasteland 2, and with Torment: Tides of Numenera and A Bard’s Tale IV on the horizon, three crowdfunded games seems like a lot of work for a collection of former CRPG developers, but they do have a pedigree of at least some success. Let’s take a quick look at the improvements over Wasteland 2.
As previously stated, Wasteland 3 takes place in the harsh lands of frozen Colorado, where you, the sole survivor of Team November, must survive and fight to free the last remnants of humanity from the raider’s chokehold. Along the way, you’ll encounter new vehicular combat, environmental dangers, revamped combat and dialogue systems, and perhaps most surprisingly, the choice to engage in co-operative multiplayer, not unlike what has been seen out of the Divinity: Original Sin games. Developing your Ranger Base to support the populace is returning as well, along with a story written by the lead minds behind Wasteland 2 and Torment: Tides of Numenera.
If that all doesn’t get your CRPG senses tingling, I’m not sure what will. Not all who have heard the news are particularly pleased, however. inXile has made the switch from Kickstarter to fig.co, with limited community success. Some feel as though inXile, after three of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns in the website’s history have no need to crowdsource any additional money from the community. Still others don’t quite trust fig.co, and its promise of “investing in a game’s development.” Despite these reservations, as of writing, Wasteland 3 has notched about $1.8 million of its $2.75 million goal, on the first day and currently stands at $2.3 million already. Make of that what you will.
Wasteland 3 is tentatively scheduled for a Q4 2019 release.
(Newport Beach, CA – October 5, 2016) – inXile Entertainment announces Wasteland 3, sequel to 2014’s Wasteland 2, which stands as one of the most successful videogame crowdfunding projects, and delivering with an 87 Metacritic score. The Wasteland 3 crowdfunding campaign on Fig (fig.co/w3) offers both equity and rewards options, with an overall goal of raising $2.75M USD, $2.25M coming from equity.
“If a platform like Fig had existed back when we kickstarted the Wasteland 2 campaign, investors would have been very happy,” said Brian Fargo, CEO, inXile Entertainment. “We want to take our Wasteland franchise to a darker and brutal post-apocalyptic setting that builds on the foundation of Wasteland 2. A game that is ambitious in reactivity and with new features like multi-player and the integration of vehicles into the world.”
In Wasteland 3, inXile builds upon its award-winning franchise, beginning shortly after the end of Wasteland, with the player starting the game as the sole survivor of Team November, a Ranger squad dispatched to the icy Colorado wastes. Colorado is a land of buried secrets, lost technology, fearsome lunatics, and deadly factions, most of which have never heard of the Desert Rangers.
