As unearthed (as always) by those meddling ki…uhm, a NeoGAF user by the name of Nzyme32 (who has an avatar of Mark Lamarr for some terrifying reason) and confirmed by our colleagues at TechRaptor the Steam Storefront will soon look very different. And a whole lot better in my opinion. Making game images larger, adding in several new sections which include games recommend by your Steam friends, are more direct version of your Steam cue and those recommended by Curators you follow. In fact, it seems the whole Curator system is getting a pretty hefty overhaul so as to put a larger emphasis on their contribution to the service.
Something that really caught my attention is that Friend Activity will now have a place on the home page too. Which is good, because I keep forgetting where to ruddy find it, and am constantly being told off by people for not seeing the awesome new picture they have of them teabagging a Mancubus in the testicles. Other changes include making game updates more noticeable, top selling new releases (isn’t that already there?!) and targeted promotion of newly released games. Again based on previous purchases and, for the final point, your new global preferences.
This last is likely to be the feature that most people will most welcome. As it will allow you further customise your storefront to completely remove certain types of games and/or make them more prevalent. So I can finally get shut off all those hidden object games Steam seems to think I’m madly in love with…despite not owning a single one.
There is currently no confirmed date for when these changes will roll out, but the information comes to us originally from notifications being sent to some SteamWorks developers which give a loose schedule of “the next few weeks.” So expect Steam to be broken just in time for the Halloween sale then eh? That will be interesting. But who are we kidding, we’re all going to throw money at them anyway.
