While inXile’s developers are adding the finishing touches on Torment: Tides of Numenera, trailers have been showing off just how many new features are going to be on display in this old-fashioned isometric RPG.
While big budget RPGs focus on the choice of who’s face you want to bash in with your mace, Torment has been popular for its dialogue and choice-heavy gameplay where you can sometimes avoid making faces entirely if you’ve got the right skills. Will you pump your strength? Or will you put points into deception? Just more dexterity might unlock new abilities, more charisma unlocks dialogue options you can even use mid-fight on scared soldiers who’ve just lost their leader and want a way out.
Of course, you’ll collect some interesting allies of your own. Some of these allies will have “trans-dimensional alter egos,” have summonable living tattoos, and some will just be really, really good at punching people. You’re able to take out three companions at a time, but it sounds like you’ll get plenty to choose from with their own plethora of abilities and skill trees.
If your party does fail you, death isn’t the end in Torment. You don’t just respawn at the nearest bonfire; instead you’re teleported to a totally separate realm where you can find new sub-quests, adventure, and eventually find a path towards your own resurrection to continue your main quest stronger than ever.
In other words, Torment has some cool new ideas and are sewing them into one of the oldest genres in gaming. You can expect to see those ideas for yourself in Torment: Tides of Numenera on February 28th on PC.
