Return to Morrowind, a time when the Elder Scrolls series was strange, obtuse, and good in the latest expansion for the Elder Scrolls Online, coming on June 6th, 2017.
Set 700 years before the events of the third Elder Scrolls game proper, the Morrowind expansion has players facing off against a calamity of apocalyptic proportions, while still introducing them to new lands and characters as well. Charged with preventing the destruction of the entire island chain via meteor, players will have an opportunity to explore recognizable cities still under construction during the events of the MMO, along with traversing the alien landscapes that Morrowind became famous for.
Also coming in this update is the first class to be added in post-release: the Warden. Making heavy usage of nature magic and an animalistic ally to rip and tear your foes apart, the Warden gives players some new tools to play with in a new landscape. Also coming with the Morrowind update is a new 12-man “trial,” ESO’s moniker for a raid, and a new 4v4v4 PvP arena battleground. Four editions are going to be sold of the Morrowind expansion, each with varying levels of digital goods, and all of which will give players a head start on exploring ESO’s largest landmass addition to date.
If you’ve never played Morrowind, the distinction that the events of the MMO take place 700 years prior to Morrowind the game are important for one sole reason: some time after the game’s story concludes, Morrowind itself is destroyed. Indeed, sometime between the events of Oblivion and Skyrim (and only explained in supplementary novels), a series of chain events cause the destruction of Morrowind entirely, which is why the Dunmer were forced out of their homeland.
There’s a number of events that take place within the game which would likely give some perspective on what sort of stories will come with this new expansion, so, despite its age and archaic systems, go play the original, 2002 release of Morrowind, if only in preparation for The Elder Scrolls Online’s version, set to be released on June 6th, 2017.
