With its Steam listing updated to reflect the news, Ninja Theory’s upcoming mental illness action-adventure has netted itself an August 8th release date. It’ll cost you a rather modest £24.99, and if you pre-purchase, it comes with a digital comic called ‘Senua’s Song’. Produced in collaboration with Valiant Comic’s, chances are it’ll be a prequel tale. But they haven’t given any specifics as of it yet. There’s an official trailer too, which you can see above.

Though we haven’t talked about it much… as in, not at all for at least half a year. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is a game I’ve been keeping a close eye on personally. As previously stated, though it’s ostensibly an action adventure, the main focus is on the mental health, or rather ‘unhealth’, of the main character, Senua. With the voices she hears being symbolic of conditions such as schizophrenia, meaning that a lot of the game is actually, it seems, going to turn out to have been all going on inside her mind.

Ninja Theory have even consulted with mental health professionals along the way. Taking advice and guidance on how to better incorporate some very real, complex issues into something that can also be easily consumed by the mass market. Something which no other medium can hope to achieve. No matter how good the art is, there’s something unique to video-games that really allows people to directly interact with events. Rather than being a passive observer in, say, a film like ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape‘.

Whether it will turn out to be any good or not…welp, we’ll find out in August.
