Offering a card-based take on the traditional RTS format, Halo Wars 2’s Blitz Mode has entered an open beta, which runs from January 20th through the 30th. Reminiscent of some mobile-based deck-building games, Halo Wars 2 sees RTS units, formations, and counters transformed into cards, making for a shorter mode for players looking for quick matches. Players choose leaders which grant access to various units to build decks with. For a more in-depth look at the game, read 343’s breakdown here, but it seems to be quite the robust experience, despite its semblance to games of a simpler time.
Although progress isn’t carried over from the beta to the full game, players can still participate in 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3 games, though restricted to their respective platforms. 343 has gone on record saying that for the future, cross-platform play will be considered, but it’s not enabled for Halo Wars 2. Players looking to check out 343 and Creative Assembly’s RTS effort can expect a 12GB download, plus a Windows 10 64-bit requirement.
Also coming with the beta is a Halo Wars 2 mini-game, played out via Twitter’s direct messaging system. If it sounds weird, it sort of is, you use units to (hopefully) defeat your opponent, without having any knowledge of what’s coming. Victory nets you a code for an exclusive in-game skin. It’s different, to say the least. Halo Wars 2’s beta runs from January 20th through the 30th, with Halo Wars 2 releasing on February 21st.
