E3: New Game+ Expo 2020

It’s time for this year’s gigantic New Game+ Expo stream, six and a half hours of games from various developers and publishers. We don’t reckon there’ll be anything too surprising at the show – we’ve got fairly good expectations of what we’ll see from each exhibitor – but we do expect a lot of interesting announcements for PC and consoles. As usual, the full stream is embedded above and individual games are below.

Tin & Kuna

Tin & Kuna is a platformer game with an almost New Super Mario World level style. You play a rolly little guy called Kuna on their journey to rescue their friend Tin from the forces of evil. The brief bit of gameplay we were shown shows rolling around and bouncing off of objects and enemies to reach higher places, what appears to be towing a ball, and Goomba-like enemies. Tin & Kuna is launching in Fall 2020 for PC and consoles.

Fight Crab

Magnificently ludicrous crustacean combat game Fight Crab got a new trailer filled with battling crabs and stupid weapons all topped off with a mid 1990s anime intro style song. The trailer shows mounted combat, underwater combat, combat with sci-fi mecha type weapons, lightsabers, Fight Crab is coming to Steam on 30 July 2020.

Samurai Shodown

SNK revealed that the Warden from Ubisoft’s For Honor will be the latest character added to Samurai Shodown via DLC. The DLC releases today, 24 June 2020, for all platforms.

Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World- The Prophecy of the Throne

Isekai anime masterpiece Re:Zero is getting its own visual novel set in the royal selection ark of the story. A promising concept for fans of the show and unfortunately spoiler heavy to go into more detail so we’ll move on to the fact that it’s releasing on PC, PlayStation 4, and Switch in Winter 2020.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV

Long running Nihon Falcom RPG series Trails of Cold Steel will be getting its fourth entry soon. The story presented in the trailer is a bit incomprehensible for those of us who haven’t played the games but it looks like the RPG action is intact and as flashy as ever. Trails of Cold Steel IV is releasing on PlayStation 4 on 27 October 2020 and on PC and Switch in 2021.

Death end re;Quest 2

It may have a title whose grammar makes no sense but the horror RPG series famous for its almost naked heroines and excellent RPG combat is returning for a sequel on PC and PlayStation 4 on 25 August 2020. Corpse Party creator Makoto Kedoin is also collaborating on this one.

Idol Manager

Idol Manager is a game that does exactly what it says on the tin; you’re placed in the role of a manager for a Japanese idol group and can make your own decisions in narrative elements to guide your girls to stardom. Idol Manager is coming to PC in 2020.

Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2

Legendary game developer Koji Igarashi introduced a sequel to Castlevania 3 style platformer Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon. Exorcist samurai Zangetsu makes a return along with a new cast of characters; spear wielding healer Dominique; sharpshooter Robert who can equip different guns; and Hachi the corgi who pilots a steampunk mecha and is presumably the goodest boy. Unfortunately there’s no date for this one other than “coming soon.”

Fairy Tail

Long running manga and anime Fairy Tail is getting an RPG from Koei Tecmo that will feature the Grand Magic Games and Tartaros story arks. There will be 16 playable characters that include series favourites like Lucy, Natsu, Gray, and Erza, as well as some of the other dragon slayers. This one is looking like it’ll be a brilliant first game for the beloved series. Fairy Tail is launching on 31 July 2020 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Switch.

Shiren The Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate

Dungeon crawling roguelike series Shiren The Wanderer is getting its fifth game in the form of The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate. The game will feature the genre’s typical randomly generated dungeons, turn based combat, and adorable little animal companion Koppa. The game will also have a feature where other players can revive you when you’re downed but it’s not really explained. Shiren The Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate is coming in 2020.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox

Red haired boy wonder Adol is returning for a ninth entry in the cult RPG series Ys. This time he finds himself transformed into a monstrum (we don’t know what that is either but it sounds bad) and must ally with other monstrum in a prison city to discover the city’s secrets and overcome evil. Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is coming in 2021 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Switch.

Phew, that was a rapid fire showcase of a lot of hot titles coming out of Japanese studios and publishers. The latter half of the show really took us by storm with sequels to excellent games being dropped left and right and of course we can’t overlook my personal most wanted game of the whole show, Fairy Tail. If you’re a JRPG aficionado this might have just been the best show of the year.
