Dark Souls III announced their first expansion Ashes of Andriel today which showed us a snow-swept “brand new area” brimming with mystery, religious symbolism, and death. Lots, and lots of death.
As you’d expect from a Souls game, very little in terms of story is revealed, but it looks like there will be no shortage of things to do and find in the “Frozen Land of Ariandel” based on all the new enemy types, magics, bosses, and a “terrible secret” to “uncover” as Namco has put it. In screenshots of the DLC we see new weapons and concept art that are giving off heavy story hints that Ariandel might not be as genuine as we think.
“Players are tasked to enter this new world and defeat the evil within and uncover the mystery of what has caused the land to become defiled.”
Dark Souls plot guru VaatiVidya and other Souls series veterans are thinking that Ariandel isn’t as “brand new” as Bandai Namco is saying, and that we might actually be returning to Dark Souls 1’s Painted World of Ariamis. The frigid landscape, some familiar areas in the trailer, a statue of Velka, and concept art of an emaciated crow-woman are all familiar call-backs to the Painted World if not just blatantly the world itself.
While the goddess of sin Velka and Crossbreed Priscilla from Dark Souls don’t make direct appearances in Dark Souls III, there’s been allusions, hints, and speculations that they still exist in some fashion. And with the Painted World being the prison of Priscilla and Velka being its guardian it wouldn’t be surprising if we see more of them in Ashes of Andriel.
Of course to go along with all that story Namco has promised “new weapons, armor sets, and magic for players to discover and experiment with.” Some of the new spells and miracles can be seen in the trailer while what looks like a new straight sword or greatsword can be seen in the concept art.
Ashes of Ariandel is the first of Dark Souls III’s planned DLC packages with the second package planned for early 2017. Ashes of Ariandel will be available starting October 25th and cost $15 or as part of a season pass for $25.
