Fear the Effect of Kickstarter

Some years ago, back in the heady days of the PlayStation, as in the PlayStation, without any number following it, yeah, back then, believe it or not, Square Enix (or Squaresoft as they were then known) didn’t suck. To be fair, they don’t really suck now, but they are far from what they used to be. Back in those days of yore mentioned a moment ago.

One of the IPs they were pursuing at the time was an interesting little point and click style 3D puzzle game. As in, it had the visual perspective of a point ‘n click, but played like a TPS. Something akin to the early Resident Evil series, but with 3D movement. Actually, it even had a health system similar to the early Resi games. With the amount of damage you could take, at a given time, being dependent on how much your character was pissing themselves. Top it off with a cel shaded aesthetic and you bet your britches I was hooked!

So, last week, along came a Kickstarter for Fear Effect Sedna. Licensed out to Sushee under the Square Enix Collective. Which, for those who missed it, is basically Square saying they don’t have the money/time/inclination/skill/whatever to still make good games out of their old IPs. And so have opened them up to third parties who come along with a good enough pitch, providing they can procure enough financial support (€100k in this case) via crowd funding first. Which brings us to Kickstarter and, full disclosure, a campaign to which I have put forward €170 of my own money as a pledge.

Currently standing at a little over half done, with just under three weeks to go, Fear Effect Sedna is an isometric, real time action game. Which, though deviating from the original gameplay model, assures us will remain true to the core of the original two games. There will be a strong emphasis on atmosphere, puzzles and, yes, cel shading. It does show a lot of promise, especially with it being a curious blend of single unit, turn based ala Shadowrun or XCOM, but played out in real time. With your view of the battlefield being limited by what each of your characters can see and said characters being able to work in tandem, when next to each other, for special combo attacks.

It will be interesting to see where this goes, if it reaches the funding goal. There’s a fair chance it will, judging by the amount already raised, but the Fear Effect franchise is something of a niche title, so it may need a little extra help to raise awareness. Which it certainly deserves, if for nothing else than to encourage ports of the first two games (and unreleased third) across to the PC. The PC being where, at present time, Sedna is intended for release. Click on through and check it out for yourself. It might just tickle your fancy. It certainly has mine…and my credit cards’. I’m just wondering if I can spare another €300 so I can be in the game…

The art for this game makes me wish for an Archer video game.
